Except for Kevin the Incorrigible (Kevin Rodda), who had the last flight at 16:26, just as the sea breeze finally blew out the thermals.
Unlike the usual day at YCAB (if such a thing exists), the conditions kept improving as the day went on. And strangely enough, the sea breeze stayed out to sea until the very end of the day.
The club made 17 flights, with over 9, by my estimate, that were extended due to soaring.
We had Kevin Roden and Barry McCarthy instructing. Mike Brunt and Arthur making flights in the Club Libelle. Arthur racked up a 1hr 00m and a 1hr 41m....making it out past the step, obviously.
We had Dale Candy and Nick Sheahon, continuing their training. Philip Dew on a check flight. And Garrett Russel took 3 AEF passengers. One of those got to watch me in the Blanik release lower than them...and then end up higher. Fun for me, anyway!
Nevertheless, Garrett was able to give his AEF's soaring experiences. And how good is it for training when you can go up for stalls and spins, then find some lift and get back up for more training? Kevin and students were taking advantage of this today!
Me? I did one flight in the Blanik. Released at 2500' and climbed right away in a thermal to 3500. Then I went over to the edge of the 4500 step but all I could find was sink. I had never been over there by myself, so I headed back to the field when I got below 3000'. But
I'll be back! Especially after I get some more outlanding training.
Kevin Rodda showed up towards the end of the day and was up to his usual mischief. I said, "Kevin, you are incorrigible!" He said, "hey, my boss called me that once, what does it mean?" Word for the day, incorrigible --- bad beyond correction or reform.
Finally, slaving away the day working on the Form 2 for Blanik XQ were Vince Everett and Erick
Dickeson, although Eric managed to make it out and up for his annual check flight with Barry, including some good soaring time.
Summary of the day: A Good Time Was Had by All! Cheers,
Tim
