| A
couple of months back we realised early in the
flying day that the three Caboolture-based K6
amigos (Bernard Gonsalves' Ka6-Cr "Sierra
Romeo", Barry McCarthy & Garrett
Russell's ES-KA6 "Romeo Sierra" and
Kevin Rodda's ES-KA6 "Romeo Victor) were all
at the flight line at the same time ... and it
was for the
first time. |
|
|
| |
| Speedy
was, as usual, very ready and very keen to launch
in SR when the other two amigos arrived at YCAB's
06 flight line on that day. However, Kevin Rodda
and Garrett Russell had recognised the nostalgia
of the occasion as they walked GRS along the
taxiway from the hangars to 06 and were both keen to get a photo of the
three vintage gliders together. With Speedy's
co-operation (even if he was not showing as much
enthusiasm as the others due to his mind being
already in thermal mode) the three gliders were
deliberately positioned together for a photo at
the flight line. |
|
|
| |
| Several
shots had been taken from different angles using
various mobile phones and cameras ... whatever
happened to be available on the day ... when Garrett
became curious as to what Kevin was
up to lying on the ground taking what was, from the
orientation of his "happy snap" camera, obviously a portrait shot
(tall and narrow) when all previous shots
taken by the assembled "photographers"
had been in landscape format (short and wide) to fit in the wing
tips of all three gliders in the shot.
|
|
|
| |
| In response to
Garrett's enquiry Kevin commented jokingly that
this was the shot for the front cover of Soaring
Australia and went on to explain to Garrett
(somewhat
tongue-in-cheek) his
"home-grown" theory as to what is needed
in a shot for the cover ... stating that it had to be in
a portrait format with the main content to be across
the centre of the shot with plenty of background
above (in this case the highway and
landscape/sky)
to accommodate the Soaring Australia
logo etc as well as sufficient foreground below (in this case the 06 grass
runway) to allow room for all the other stuff that has to
appear on the cover . All on hand had no doubt as to the fact
that these comments had been made up by Kevin
"on-the-run" and were not really to be
taken too seriously ... however, from that moment on,
the portrait shot
has been referred to by the K6 gang at Caboolture
as "the cover
shot".

| After
a few comments were made as to when
"the cover shot" would be appearing on Soaring Australia,
the following email was sent of to GFA:-

Subject: Soaring Australia Cover - Three K6's
Anne,
Attached is a photo taken today which I put
forward for consideration re the cover of Soaring Australia.
There has been a surge in interest in vintage
"wood and fabric" gliders at Caboolture and the K6's are proving to be an ideal
aircraft for Caboolture's low-ceiling and sea-breeze dominated soaring
conditions. Today was the first day that the three K6's have
been at the flight line together ... http://www.glidingcaboolture.
org.au/K6%20Eclipse.htm. They include the first K6 built in Australia (RS)
and also the second (RV).
Regards,
Kevin Rodda

| Soon
after, Anne Elliott (GFA Sub-Editor for Soaring
Australia) confirmed receipt of the email and
advised that she had passed the pic on to the
overall Editor of Soaring Australia who was
responsible for selecting the pics to appear on
the cover. Nothing more was heard until the
following emails appeared on the CGC list earlier
this week ...
On
29/12/09 Tony Sorensen wrote:- Well, we may be
able to get into the air at YCAB lately, but we
had the best cover of the year to date for Soaring
Australia delivered today, showing the three K6s
together at the flight line. Well done you four
vintage members.
On
29/12/09 John Clayton wrote:- Yes a great
cover picture! ... well done and top marks you old
vintage boys!!

| Needless
to say, Kevin was at the mailbox bright and early yesterday morning
(30/12/09) waiting for the mailman ....
and
there it was!

The
cover is credited as follows on the inside cover
of Soaring Australia ...
Cover:
Caboolture club's three K6s together at the flight
line, they include the first (RS) and second (RV)
K6s built6 in Australia.
Photo:
Kevin Rodda
It
is interesting
to note that the three K6s were (quite
unintentionally)
arranged at the flight line for the photo shoot in
their order of arrival at Caboolture ... first SR,
then RV
then SR.

| Footnote:
There had however been a little bit of
"experience" and "history" behind Kevin's
tongue-in-cheek comments about the requirements
for a cover shot. He had in fact observed
and been involved in the production of more than a
few magazine covers during his 22-year career in
the printing industry. In addition to this, he had, several years
ago, taken a
photo during the MGCQ 1995 trip to
the Morning Glory which had been affectionately titled "Another
Morning Without Glory". After many comments
had been made to him by gliding colleagues about
what a good cover it would have made for Soaring Australia (and due to the
relative novelty of the Morning Glory
at that time), he submitted the photo to GFA for
consideration. Subsequent correspondence from the Editor praised the photo but
also indicated that it could not be used for the cover
due to its
landscape orientation.
