There was a big crowd as well as an interesting story behind one of our AEF's on Sunday 06-Dec-09.  With Kenneth having been involved in operationally flying troop-carrying gliders, for once we had a passenger at the pie-cart with taller flying stories to tell than the assembled glider pilots!  Kenneth had a "family and friends" cheer squad numbering around 30 when he celebrated his 90th birthday with a flight in the IS-28 ... proudly wearing his World War II red Para beret. Having a GP (Mark Thompson) on the controls of "Charlie Quebec Charlie" was an interesting show of how really well we look after our more senior AEF clients at CGC.

Part of the small army of well wishers.

The man himself all fired up and ready to go ... complete with his Para Beret.

Another happy camper! Well done Mark.

And this from Mick Moloney ... It was a privilege to have a chat with Kenneth prior to his flight. He recalled a story about their training in gliders prior to deployment in Europe. They had a training glider called a Hotspur, which seated 8-9 troops. As the story goes, when the fighter pilots were on leave, they would try their hand at being glider pilots! The Diggers, however, weren’t too impressed by these young puppies doing aerobatics with the troops onboard!
Hence, their lunches were totally wasted and remained onboard after they departed. They also took their toll on the gliders too as they weren’t exactly meant for that kind of excitement.
A lovely bloke indeed. I reckon I could spend a long time chatting to him.

The Hotspur training glider.
