Hunter Valley Soaring

 10-Apr-12

The Hunter Valley Gliding Club is located at Warkworth (in the upper Hunter Valley approximately 2.5 hours north of Sydney). It is surrounded by coal mines and dairy farms with the main wine-growing area only 10 minutes drive away. The airfield is approximately 1.7 kilometres long and is owned by the club. During the Second World War, it was a satellite strip to the main base at Bulga (along with two other Hunter Valley satellite strips at Cessnock and Jerrys Plains). These strips were positioned inland to serve as a backup to coastal facilites such as Williamtown. During that era the strip was 2.4 kilometres long to accommodate the Liberator and Hudson bombers that flew from it.

 Runway 10 (from left ... Puchacz, K7, 1-35 and K6).
Not much urgency due to overcast sky and 2,500 ft cloud base.
