Did you look at the 8/8 overcast sky this morning and think it an unpromising day for gliding? Then prepare yourself for a surprise.

The Friday Crew, who we must admit spent an hour or two sharing similar thoughts this morning, shrugged off the fug and logged a day of 9 flights in GYK and CQC!

After huddling in hangars while we waited for a few more of the Friday regulars to dribble in along with the morning’s showers, we got off to a late start with first launch from RWY12 at 10:22. This was Louis Tumminaro with duty instructor Garrett Russell, intent on some Blanik stall/spin training if enough altitude could be found under the glowering cloud base. When they returned 23 minutes later with news that there was actually a little lift about, the rush was on to follow them into the sky.

“Rush” being a relative term for the Friday pace - it was 10:59 before Arthur Mailey and Bob Hainsworth launched in CQC. And they also returned 23 minutes later.

Barry McCarthy and Judith Smith then scored 20 minutes in GYK, Bob and Arthur another 20 minutes in CQC, before Judith joined Tony Sorensen (relieved of tug duty by Steve Bowtell) for a 27 minute hangar flight and flight of the day.

The day’s other launches were successful training flights for Louis, Lisa Schaefer and Ken Mitchell to yield totals of:

CQC 4 flights 1:25
GYK  5 flights 1:29

And we were all wrapped up by about 15:30. A very satisfactory conclusion to what started as an unpromising day.

So when you look at the morning sky tomorrow and Sunday, think twice before deciding against coming out to fly!

for a very happy Friday Crew

[Webmaster's Note: Contrary to the first impressions of some, Garrett hasn't made those words up, in fact he has chosen them quite well ... "fug" as in "the stuffy atmosphere of a poorly ventilated space" and "glowering" as in "looking angry or sullen".]
