The numbers 3, 5 and 9 featured in today's flying.   3 being the number of flights, 5 being the number of members who committed aviation and 9 the number of members who were at the field at some time.   No AEI's and MI Requests.

Mick Moloney, Alan Graham, Mike Grady and myself were there as duty crew.  The day had a few early cu's but they never mean much.  The cu's on the D'Aguilar Ranges were the ones that indicated a reasonable soaring day.   It's a pointer I learnt from Bert.  Cu's forming on the D'Aguilar Ranges before 0900 will be over Caboolture soon after 1000 and it's not often wrong.

The flying began with Mick taking Alan for a conversion flight in the Twin Astir.  A 1:01 flight not bad for a conversion flight.   I wasn't going to waste the thermals so I took our little ship the Club Libelle for a 3:06 flight.  A very pleasant flight that saw me almost get to Kilcoy with a cloud base of just 4,000ft.   A lot of very good climbs and a few very tight minutes I spent picking outlanding paddocks before the vario started screaming up, up, up.

Meanwhile Loki waited patiently for his master!

The other flight on the day was an Annual Check for Kevin Rodda with Mick in the front seat of the Twin.

That's 4 members in gliders plus the pilot responsible for getting us up there, Mike Grady our tuggie makes 5 who committed aviation.  Tony Sorensen was with us all day plus Karl Bodi and Rupert Perry who dropped in makes 8.  The ninth member was our makeover artist extraordinary, Speedy.  He spent his day in the workshop working on beautifying the IS30.  After Kevin had his Annual check with Mick he spent the rest of the day helping Speedy.  Thanks very much Speedy and Kevin.

The days statistics :-
3 flights.
4hrs 36 min flying.
5 members flying.

Finally words of advice and caution I'm quite sure David Higgs will endorse.   We do not want in-experienced pilots venturing too far from the field at Caboolture.  It's called HMAS Caboolture for a good reason.   It can be very un-friendly tiger country when you get beyond glide angle to YCAB.   You must  have some cross country experience and for your first flights beyond glide to YCAB do them with an experienced pilot.

Mick Moloney is organising a Caboolture Week at DDSC at the end of the year.   Watch for his emails on this great week when he can confirm dates.   It is a great introduction to X-country soaring that few of us can enjoy at Caboolture.

  Webmaster's note:

Surely that must be "so damn cute" Loki asking the question of Mr Leibowitz!
