Abandoned Saturday

28-Dec-13

Judith Smith's email to Garrett Russell and Kevin Rodda this morning included the comment ...

"Maybe today is not going to be kind either! Pity."

Garrett's response confirmed Judith's fears ...

Sadly, Judith, today was much less kind! I went down to the airfield as last minute relief L2 for Dave Donald, who had a family medical emergency. Drove with wipers and headlights on almost all the way from Caloundra and arrived to find the rest of the duty crew standing like shags on a rock in light drizzly rain. After a couple of hours of vainly wishing the solid overcast to clear we transferred the one AEF to tomorrow, then joined Bert at McCafe to wait out an improvement in the sky. When it was still solid overcast at 11:00, with a base of about 2,000’ and the cloud looking darker to windward, we finally conceded defeat - and I drove back up to the coast with wipers on for part of the way, yet clear and steamy hot north of Coolum. Frustrating with a capital PH!! At least flying seems more sure for tomorrow. An additional 6 or 7 degrees more sure!

Webmaster's note ...

Garrett's reference to the sound "ph" in "frustrating" is similar to your webmaster's occasional sarcastic reference to "ph as in Surf Boat". English is indeed an interesting language but it is definitely not PHONETIC ... the classic example being how "ghoti" and "fish" can sound the same (the gh = "f" as in rouGH ... the o = "i" as in wOmen ... and the ti = "sh" as in naTIon).

Hi Everyone,

The day did not get off to a great start and didn't improve.

First was several of us got an emergency call from Dave Donald as duty L2 that he had a family emergency and was at the Mater Hospital so wouldn't be able to do his duty.  In true club spirit Garrett volunteered to act as L2 until lunch time and Bob Turner volunteered to take over then.   This makes about 8-9 duties Garrett has done in the month, incredible when you consider he was trying to get some family time for Christmas and gave his time willingly at 0530.  Thanks very much Garrett and also Bob even though he wasn't needed.

Garrett's generosity was not needed as the next downer was the weather.   Low 8/8ths cloud did not inspire the thought of aviating but we waited and waited for it to hopefully burn off.  The duty crew of Garrett, Nick Sheahon, Steve Chapman, Bert Persson and myself were the only CGC members at the field and by 1115 the sky was still 8/8ths cloud and didn't look like clearing so we called it a day.  Nil flights for the day.

Hopefully tomorrow will be better conditions but with storms forecast please keep a close eye on the weather .

Have safe happy fun.
