Another hot Friday with threatened showers and a
storm which never eventuated. The usual suspects
gathered with the notable absence of John Nestor,
and the return from travels of Barry McCarthy. The
Blanik, Twin Astir and the Libelle were prepared and
dragged out to RY30, where a threatened wind change
caused us to not erect the sunshade. The wind teased
us until we finally moved to RY12 about 1400 hours,
when it was deemed too late to bother with the
sunshade. So we made do with the meager shade
provided by the pie cart, bemoaning the heat which
was almost as oppressive as that the previous
Friday.
Flying started with 2 flights by Jessica Bellamy
under Tony Sorensen's guidance in the Blanik, and a
flight by Judith Smith and Bob Turner in the Twin
Astir. Passenger Damian arrived early and was given
a 41 minute flight from 4500 feet by Bob Turner,
meanwhile Barry McCarthy decided to renew his love
affair with the Blanik while I did the same in the
Libelle. A walk in, David Liebenberg, asked if he
could be taken for a "spin", I upsold him
from a 2000 foot launch to 2500, Bob Turner took him
up in the Twin for a 50 minute ride, maybe the extra
500 feet helped but Bob said on their return that he
was down to 1500 feet before finding any lift. Bob
was the only pilot to find lift today, no one else
managing more than 20 minutes in the air. Not even
Bert Persson who took Arthur Mailey for a flight in
the Blanik, to return it to 06 for tie down, then
deciding to launch again from there. Meanwhile Tony
Sorensen and Barry McCarthy flew the Twin to
12, while the 2 Bobs dragged the Libelle back to tie
down.
Ken Mitchell continued his conversion to the Twin
with Barry, them sweating it out in the cockpit
while the tug was diverted to 06 to re-launch Bert
and Arthur by myself, unaware that they were waiting
in the Twin for a launch. They had decided to take
off from the spot where it came to rest after the
relocation flight, and I thought that it was waiting
to be retrieved. Finally I had a first flight in the
back seat of the Twin with Tony up front, landing
back on 06.
Thanks to Knoxy and Grady for flying the tug,
and to Pat for his stoic patience. At least the
drinks were cold today, and were much appreciated
once all was tied down and put to bed.
The Stats: IKW 6 flights totaling 2.26,
GYK 5 flights totaling 1.10, and JY one flight of 17
minutes.
