A Friday to end our fun

27-Dec-13

The two pilots responsible for the Club Libelle's 1:19 of flying time today also shared her wrapping up duties. The posture of the one who flew for nearly an hour shows the prostrating effect of all that hard thermaling work while the face on the other shows what "not impressed" looks like. Still, it was a 12 flight day (13 counting Speedy's self launch for a bit over an hour in his K-14 ... and all who flew went away smiling (well, most who flew) ...

First off - there were no hours clocked today. Lindsay Mitchell turned up
and scored best flight of the day of 52 mins in the Libelle about lunch
time. The entry in the Libelle's maintenance release was three flights for
1.19. Enough said.

The sky, for anyone who did not look outside today, looked sullen and
unpromising so, hoping things may improve, we concentrated mainly on
training flights, etc: Bert Persson with Ken Mitchell on two thermal finding
exercises in CQC; Kevin Dobbie off for training flights with Bob Turner then
with Garrett Russell, our L2s for the day; and Bob Hainsworth getting his
annual check done. Most of our activity was conducted on 12 but as we
started the day, John Knox in SPA and Bob Turner agreed that it was quite
obvious that we would launch GYK, CQC and GJY from 06 as that was where the
wind was and then relocate to 12 to comply with the relatively light traffic
and see what was happening later.

Hopes were that the warm, still morning would improve and cloud base would
lift from circuit height to something better. In the end, we did not get
much cooperation as launches to 3,000 were occasional and achieved only by
searching for breaks in the cloud. Arthur Mailey was not impressed by the
conditions into which he launched this week since he was back in a hurry
after JY and SPA found only very low cloud confronting them. The main change
in conditions was that the wind got up and kept everyone alert all day.

Shane Tuck took a chance on finding a thermal on his own in a hangar flight
to 06 and that was the end of GYK's four flights for 1.12 today.

Bob Hainsworth and Charles Hoch took CQC for their own thermal search but
were also victims of the low cloud. Steve Bowtell took over SPA when Knoxy
left so thanks go to Bob, Garrett, Knoxy and Steve for making our somewhat
futile attempts possible.

With storms over the Esk area and skies offering little incentive, the
decision by Garrett and left to pack gliders and SPA away while they were
dry was not difficult to make and, by 14.30 by my watch, we were carrying
our bags back to our cars. A glum end to our year.

Flight stats:

GYK 4 flights for 1:12

CQC 5 flights for 1:43

GJY 3 flights for 1:19

Maybe the weather gods will be kind and, having had their fun tormenting the
Friday crew, will push this weather through quickly so the weekend has
something much better to offer members who will, no doubt, turn out in their
dozens to make the most of a holiday weekend.

May I make a request that the supply of paper for the printer in our
'office' be replenished. I was to take a copy of our flight sheet to send on
to Kevin so he could do accounts but there was no paper and the printer was
being difficult as well. Sorry Kevin for letting you down.

Finally best wishes to everyone for a brilliant New Year of flying.

Stay safe everyone,
