Short day Saturday

22-Mar-14

The day got underway with the Duty Crew (David Higgs, me, Nick Sheahon and Tony Esler) being joined by Mick Moloney, Alex Horvath, Tony Sorensen, Bernard "Speedy" Gonsalves, Bert Persson and two brand new student members ...

New member Jennifer FAUSTER with today's Duty Pilot Nick SHEAHON. Jenny is an Austrian architecture student who is in Australia as part of as 6 month internship. She is also a solo-rated glider pilot in Austria.

New Member Christopher BIERMAN (right) with his dad Danny. Chris is an Aviation student at Griffith University and is also a trainee power pilot who has had one glider flight at Kingaroy. Danny reckons that it is Chris' hair style that makes him look taller!

With Jen and Chris all signed up, we headed for 12 with the Blanik (GYK) and the IS-28 (CQC).

The first launch at 10:55 was Chris Bierman taking an ab-initio training flight with Mick Moloney in GYK.
Speedy and Alex arrived at the flight line with the Kookaburra (GLM) and we also had a welcome visit to the pie-cart from Neil Schaefer (a CGC club member and instructor who is the newly appointed RAAus Assistant Operations Manager) .... before our CFI David Higgs took me on a check flight in CQC with the front seat instruments covered by pretty hot-pink "paste-it" squares at 11:18 am.

That was the end of the day's gliding operations however as the airfield was closed shortly after a tragic fatal plane crash that occurred on 12 at around 11:30 am as David and I were joining circuit for the landing of what turned out to be the Club's last flight of the day.

The airfield will remain closed tomorrow (Sunday).

Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those who perished so tragically at YCAB today.
