If you’ve been hankering for a more precise
definition of the “very low cloud” which
cancelled gliding operations today, just look at the
photos below.
AEI Lindsay Mitchell and I had agreed early that
the day was destined to be unsoarable. Tuggie Dan
Kershaw and duty pilot David Guzzwell concurred,
but with regret because we had two paying
customers at the airfield.
Jason Humrich wanted to train for rear seat
endorsement. Rupert Perry just wanted to get his
seat in the air.
Neither was going to get very far in the
conditions, so while Jason went off to visit
family Rupert lined up a suddenly available Foxbat.
The power boys weren’t any keener on the day’s
limited possibilities than we were!
And since a Foxbat has two seats, here is the
eyewitness justification of our decision:
Yes, that’s a thousand feet on the clock.
And that’s thickish cloud not very far above.
No wonder the few aircraft on the CTAF were
making calls like “10 nautical miles inbound
at 1,000 feet”
