Windy day at 24

20-Sep-13

Was it the wind that changed the letters around ... or should it say "TWARLER PWARN"?

"I touched down on 24 at 16:17 re my second flight in WUC (after all but Barry, Arthur and Lynette had headed for home). The flight was therefore 2 hours 5 minutes. I did not get out of 3500ft step but climbed to the 3500ft ceiling within the step 9 times from between 1500 and 2000ft. Patchy lift ... great thermaling practice. My earlier flight in WUC (only 11 minutes) proved without doubt that there was no lift below 2000ft at around 1:30 pm!"

Kevin Rodda’s comments above indicate the sort of day our small Friday crew gathered up today! We could not blame the weather, though the fact that we were on 24 for the day, and also the fact that the wind made for some interesting landings for us to observe, indicates that many of our flights were of the shorter variety. CQC and QA were our conveyances on this occasion.

L2, Barry McCarthy, and tuggie, John Knox, commenced the day with some check flights in QA before mutual flying got under way. John Nestor and Shane Tuck widened their experience of flying CQC, whereupon John and Neil Schaefer scored the flight of the day at 46 mins in a Club aircraft, beating Bob Hainsworth and Charles Hoch’s 42mins and later, Arthur Mailey and Karl Bodi’s time of 31 mins. As I said, other times for our 12 flights were very ordinary!

Apart from the arrival of Steve Bowtell to take over command of TOJ that was our complement for the day. Unfortunately, we had to end early so TOJ could be delivered to Archerfield as required so maybe later flights may have been better. Maybe. Anyway, well done Kevin.

Both aircraft added five flights to their total landings with QA recording 1.59 for its time and CQC adding an extra minute at exactly 2 hours.

Obviously, the departure of the tug means that our members will not be flying this weekend so it may be a good idea to put in some time mulching the garden ready for the forecast storm on Sunday? Just a thought.
