The last flying day
of 2013 was forecast to be hot and like most
places around QLD, temperatures at YCAB managed to
exceed the forecast.
Duty Crew consisted of Peter John (L2), Steve
Bowtell (Tuggie), Chris Weir (AEI) and myself as
DP. We had a passenger booked for 11am and
the early arrival of new student/air cadet Bailey
Seymour saw us preparing both CQC and GYK. The
air was stifling before we had finished
preparations at about 0900 and extra precautions
were stipulated early against potential burns from
seat cushions, seat belt buckles and structure.
Wind direction favoured runway 30 and that’s
where we set up with first launch being a mutual
for Chris Weir and Alan Graham at 0935. The
day’s launches were arranged in pairs so that
everyone, including Steve, got plenty of time to
sit under the awning and refresh before venturing
out into the scorching sun.
Temperatures soared on the airfield, reaching an
official high of “Bloody hot”.
My sister, visiting from the UK, took a flight
with Chris Weir; Speedy decided he needed an
“engine run test” after adjusting his
carburettors and managed 3 hours, ultimately
making use of a sea-breeze convergence and our
passenger, Malcolm Perry, scored a 55 minute
flight, again with Chris, which apparently
resulted in him showing interest in joining the
club. Keep an eye out for him next week.
The Blanik was kept busy as Peter John continued
training flights with Bailey Seymour and 4
launches were tallied in GYK’s logbook. Late
day heat (did I mention it was hot?) deterred any
further flights in CQC from available members,
despite the evidence of lift that Chris brought
back and the fact that Speedy could be seen still
circling around the field and we packed up for the
day.
Last landing occurred at 1328 and cool drinks were
enjoyed in Kevin’s hangar before heading home.
Thanks to all members and crew for your active
participation in trying weather.
Flight tallies:
CQC - 3 launches for 1:36
GYK - 4 launches for 0:55
Happy New Year and safe flying!
