On again off again Friday at YCAB

The
questions about today's flying weather began before
anyone got to the airfield - emails and phone calls
from members wondering whether the drive out was
worthwhile.
At
08:18 Bob Turner, John Knox and I looked at the sky
around YCAB and agreed it had not been worthwhile.
By
09:12 the faces of Bob Hainsworth, Arthur Mailey,
Kevin Dobbie, John Nestor (and Anne) and Ken Mitchell
looking up at the same but subtly different sky made
us change our minds. The knowledge that Steve Bowtell
and Tony Sorensen were together in the tug hangar
seemed a good omen to reassure us.
So
we sent out the correction email, DI'd GYK and CQC and
were soon joined by Rupert Perry. Then the wheels fell
off. Literally.
Do
you know the small wheels that roll along the tracks
at the top of the door opening in the tug hangar, from
which those big heavy doors are suspended? No, not
many of today's crew did either. But we very quickly
all knew that one had separated from its door and we
were stuck with a very big jam.
So
the day's on again off again flying was off again, at
least for the considerable time and trips to hardware
stores and consultation with Bert and Speedy that it
took us to sort it all out well enough to ensure
secure operations for this weekend.
Bottom
line: first flight just before 11:00, last landing
just before 13:00, our narrow window of opportunity
allowing sufficient time to wrap up before the storms.
Five flights only in GYK for 1:11 total.
And
the good news is that weekend flyers have three
gliders, a tug, a tug hangar which can be opened and
closed (carefully) and forecasts for better weather
than today. Make the most of it!
