Between Mick Moloney’s “We Are Flying” and
“Flying Finished” photos today, his duty crew
and daily customers logged five flights and an
enjoyable morning out in the open air. Very open
air, because in the absence of any pre-solo pilots
or passengers, and the presence of a pessimistic
RASP lift forecast, we left the Blaniks, the Club
Libelle and the Pie Cart to their tie down slumber
and took only CQC out to RWY12.
Oh, and a small stack of plastic chairs in the
back of the Barina.
The crew were tuggie Steve Bowtell, AEI Neil
Muspratt and the scowling beard in the foreground
of “Flying Finished”.
The customers were Rod Wilson, Rupert Perry,
Lindsay Mitchell (who only dropped by for the
morning anyway) and David Higgs (who came to us on
the rebound after missing a hot date with Steve
Chapman and a Hurricane).
Oh, and Speedy Gonsalves (a self-serve customer
with his motor glider GYP) and Peter John (a
non-customer due to a prior commitment to his
powered aircraft).
Every one of the customers and crew above got
airborne at some time or other, with flights
ranging all the way up to 28 minutes in what lift
there was to find, until the development of 8/8ths
overcast finally convinced us to pack up the
plastic chairs, clear the kangaroos off RWY06 for
the tie down flight and move operations to the
Golden Wings clubhouse.
Just as well because, Speedy, if we put any money
on the bet we made that I’d drive through rain
on the way home - I won!
