Standing looking at rain on the pool did not make a hopeful start for the day but eventually it cleared and a day at Caboolture seemed to be possible. Of course, by then I was late and found Bob Turner and Brian Allerby rigging their Libelle while everyone was setting up on 12 with GYK, CQC and SPA waiting for their day to begin. My problems finding out what was happening were due to the phone being plugged in but not charging – the plug was the wrong way around.

After the first flights, by Tony Sorensen, our L2 for the day, and Ken Mitchell in CQC and Barry McCarthy and Louis Tumminaro in GYK, the times started to look enticing with Bob Hainsworth and Arthur Mailey returning CQC after 53 mins for our passenger, Colleen Allan. Once GYK returned, John Nestor hopped in and took off without delay.

Bob Turner and GCP were, by then, ready to go and departed for 1.30. Bert Persson had returned from lunch and was quickly launched in CP for 1.46. There was lift to be had most of the day but we just had to find it. The arrival of the sea breeze spoilt the fun for a bit but the lift was soon back again for the final flights and was much smoother.

GCP (Libelle 201B) at the flight line with Blanik GYK and Pawnee SPA in the background ready to roll.

Despite the cloud above, most of us agreed that the lift seemed to be out in the blue as well but there lurked big sink too, and more so when the cloud had retreated to the west where no Blanik should go.

Neil Schaeffer and Lisa joined us and had a nice flight in CQC before Neil was pressed into service as instructor for Kevin Dobbie in GYK while Barry took Kevin’s friend, Graeme Lowe, up in the recently vacated CQC. Kevin had encountered the delays after an accident on the M1 but no one was in a hurry to leave as the day cooled a little.

A late finish saw 18 flights on the sheet with Arthur Mailey and Tony Sorensen showing us how to do spins in CQC at end their day on 06. Flight of the day – obviously Bert in the Libelle. Club flight of the day – the aforementioned Bob and Arthur at the start of the day. Hopefully, it will be a good day for our weekend groups. Just take care to carry lots of water and sun protection!

Stats: CQC, 9 flights for 3.20 and GYK, 7 flights for 3.08.
