Apparently neither mad men nor Englishmen, these Kangaroos do not "venture out into the noonday sun". As you can probably tell by the shadows, this photo was taken not long after noon ... on the southern side of the hangar that faces across to the Warbirds Museum. The kangaroos had no intention of leaving the shade as we pulled over very close to them in the retrieve vehicle to take photos. [photo/caption: Kevin Rodda]

Sunday morning dawned clear and bright with a forecast for a 32+day.  Keeping in the shade and a high fluid intake would be the requirement for the day.    When I arrived at YCAB about 0745 Chris Weir already had the Libelle uncovered with assistance from Bradley Seymour and Rory Duncan.   Bradley and Rory are Air Cadets who have joined us to continue their training in conjunction with their training days at Warwick.

After a brief hiatus (Sep'04 to Jul'13), Neil Schaefer has been back flying with CGC. Over the last 6 months his Instructor rating has been renewed and he is currently in the process of training in SPA for tug pilot endorsement. Today we added another string to Neil's bow ... retrieve vehicle driver! [photo/caption: Kevin Rodda]

Duty crew Tony Sorensen, Mark Thompson, Alex Horvath and yours truly all reported for duty. Soon more keen aviators arrived ... Kevin Rodda, Rachael Barnes, Damien Chrzanowski, Rupert Perry, Jacob Mason, David Crocker for starters.  Of course Speedy (Bernard Gonsalves) and Bert (Persson) were present as well. Steve Bowtell with son Nathan arrived mid morning after a few hours sleep due to finishing a night shift.

Bailey Seymour (Australian Air Force Cadets) has been flying with us since Dec'13. [photo/caption: Kevin Rodda]

RW30 was the starting preferred runway till the wind shifted early afternoon and operations were moved to RW06.  Neil Schaefer continued his tug pilot training under Tony's watchful eye and part of that training was a tug-glider combination landing that few of us have seen and has been seldom used for real.  Tony and Steve occupied the Blanik for the hook-up exercise.   Chris in the Clubbie Libelle found conditions to his liking with 2 flights of 1:10 and 1:21.  These were the longest flights of the day with Jacob's 1:03 in the IS28 the only flights over the hour. All other flights except the AEF for 0:41 were training flights so long flights were not the order of the day.    Bert's did disappear West for 3:19 and I was told when returning he had to look for sink to get down.   Speedy and Kevin also did 47 minutes in the Kookaburra.
Rory Duncan  (Australian Air Force Cadets) flew with us for the first time today. [photo/caption: Kevin Rodda]

Late in the day Kevin had the pleasure of introducing a young lady from Austria, Jennifer Fauster, to gliding in Australia.  Jennifer is here for 6 months working and studying and indicated she will return next weekend to join the club.  She is well qualified and has about 30 solo flights.

Rachael Barnes joined CGC in Sep'13. [photo/caption: Kevin Rodda]

Generally a good day for all but it was disappointing that Damien did not get a flight.  This was in part due to the duty crew not knowing he and Rachael needed to leave by 1PM.  It is important to tell the Duty Instructor and Duty Pilot that you need to leave at a certain time and they will then slot you in to fly.   We all do our best to try to ensure members do the flying they would like but we need to know if there are time constraints.  Please tell us.

Damien Chrzanowski (pronounced Sha-nov-ski) also joined CGC in Sep'13. [photo/caption: Kevin Rodda]

15 flights for the day.

Club Libelle GJY 2 flights for 2:31
Blanik GYK 6 flights for 1:43
IS-28 CQC 6 flights for 2:57
Kookaburra GLM 1 flight for 0:47

On my way home I picked up the 'new' Blanik covers from Tash South after some modifications. Thank-you Tash for your efforts in doing the mods and your efforts to mend the older covers.

Enjoy many safe fun flights,
Lindsay Mitchell
