 Sunglasses Saturday

14-Jun-14

The day that greeted the small contingent at YCAB this morning  did not look promising ... and certainly lived up to that promise!

With the mention that winds from the south were expected, the Duty Crew of David Higgs, Kevin Rodda, Rupert Perry and Karl Bodi headed for RWY12 with Blanik GYK and Pawnee SPA despite some powered traffic already using RW30. There we were joined a little later by Rupert's friend John Kahler.

After waiting for what seemed like an eternity for a break in the circuit traffic (which was by then all heading to the north west off RWY30) the decision was made to also move our operations to RWY30.

There was some speculation that the smartphone that was being used to check the weather forecast earlier may have been upside down when viewed!

David Higgs with my assistance had the flight line at RWY30 well and truly under control.

Karl Bodi had SPA ready but with no promises of towing gliders to lift. When I commented that he had never towed me into lift, Karl's immediate response was that he only did that for his friends!  (Karl 1 - Kevin 0)

The first and only flight of the day was Rupert Perry (who appears to have found my barber since I last saw him) with John Kahler. They managed a 16 minute flight in GYK from a 3200 feet launch at 10:34.

Plans had been made for at least another flight into the dull sky, however they were soon shelved when spots of rain started to fall as Rupert and John returned to RW30. With rain falling to the west of Caboolture and heading our way (we by then had received first hand reports re washouts of gliding at DDSC and Warwick from rain coming in from the west) the decision was made to get SPA and GYK under cover as quickly as possible.

The balance of the days operations took place out of the rain in Hangar 22 where we were joined by tomorrow's rostered tug pilopt Neil Schaefer who commented that the outlook for gliding tomorrow looks much better.

After a de-briefing over coffee at Macca's, the trip home to Brisbane through light but persistent rain proved the decision to pack up early to be a correct one.

Oh, and why was this report named "Sunglasses Saturday"? Certainly not because of the glare. The end of the day saw Karl searching everywhere for his sunglasses. When he came into Hangar 22 looking for them, I failed to tell him straight away where I had seen them.

This photo shows where they were the whole time ...
