A
sunny day for this week's flying Friday saw a small-ish
group ready to
head
off for 12 where most of the action seemed to be. With
light winds,
John
Knox and Bob Turner and Tony Sorensen agreed that
launching from 06
made
sense, after which Ken Mitchell and Bob took the van
and Magna to their
familiar
spots on 12.
John
Nestor launched first in GYK then Arthur Mailey and I
set off in CQC
with
the hope that the few bits of cloud developing about
us were good
indicators
of lift developing. John returned after 28 mins and we
were far
less
successful. Lots of sink about and lift still getting
itself organised.
Undeterred,
Ken set off for a thermal coaching flight with Bert
and came
back
with the flight of the day in a Club glider of 1.21,
mainly Ken said,
because
he was suffering mental overload and needed to digest
Bert's wisdom
before
flying again. Also, Bert needed his morning tea.
Once
SPA returned, and with cloud now looking better,
Arthur and I set off
again
and, this time, thanks to Arthur's skill in finding
and 'milking' any
lift,
we did significantly better so we were content to call
it quits for
the
day when we returned. There was lift about but it was
hard to get much
above
3000' and watching Ken and Bert materialise well above
us here and
there
was somewhat frustrating!
Steve
Bowtell took over after John left and Kevin Rodda in
WUC launched for
1.32
at which time everyone was planning final flights for
the day, most of
us
content to sit and chat and watch storms developing to
the west in the
heat
of the day - all under the watchful eyes of a goanna
spotted by Steve
in
a tree just over the fence.

To
get CQC back home, Bob and Tony went off for a flight
together while John
Nestor
was cajoled into taking a 'hangar' flight while we
packed up with Ken
heading
off on a 'roo-clearing run along 06.
Despite
our short day, times were reasonable with CQC
recording 2.14 from
its
four flights and GYK, 2.24 for its three. Then there
was Kevin's WUC, of
course,
as mentioned and I heard that Speedy had been out and
about too.

Well
after today's operations had been brought to an end by
the sea breeze coming in early to produce a blue and
virtually thermal-less sky above and to the west of
the airfield (last launch was at 1210), the sky cycled
again with cumulus clouds drifting in from the east to
form a huge cloud street that stretched from Bribie
Island to as far as you could see out to the west
beyond Caboolture. These pics were taken from the
apron at the front of Hangar 21 at around 1530 ...

May
the weekend crews have good days with those thermals
being a little more
cooperative.
Stay
safe,
