Spin Cycle Saturday at CGC

Famous
last words: just two launches after I said at the Pie
Cart briefing, “we’ll probably be on 30 all
day,” I got a good lesson in taking BOM forecasts
too literally and the Saturday crew moved to 24 for
the rest of the day. But this is not why today was a
typical July/August day. That has more to do with the
spin cycle.
When
almost half the flights for a day involve spinning, it
has to be Annual Check Flight season.
Five
of today’s 11 flights featured a HASLL check soon
after tow release, with the result that Rupert Perry,
Mark Thompson and David Higgs can now legally commit
another year’s worth of soaring. The other two
flights were by young member Bailey Seymour to show he
can spin a Blanik as well as an Air Cadets Puch, and
Gympie member Ray Outteridge ticking off an important
box on the way to his first glider solo in almost five
decades.
Yet
for all that activity it was another day of difficult
lift in the absence of any easily identified wave
despite the SW wind.
Remember
the Friday average of 19.9 minutes a flight? Today’s
was 19.09.
Longest
flight was 28 minutes achieved by Lindsay Mitchell for
our one AEF passenger.
Best
boasting rights go to Bailey for his first solo at
Caboolture.
And
the prize for most circuits goes to Tony Esler, our
tug pilot for all 11 launches.
Tomorrow
promises more crystal clear winter sky and great
aerial views of our playground. So come out for your
own check flight, and see if you can break the 19
minute barrier!
