Almost six hours flight time from just 9 launches - summer soaring is on the way at Caboolture.

The flights occurred in four gliders - two from the club fleet and two private, and the stats for the day were such that Twin Astir IKW was the lowest scoring aircraft with 1:15 from its one launch.

In rising order from there - Standard Libelle GCP at 1:18, Blanik GYK at 1:30 and short wing Kookaburra GLM at a whopping 1:52!

Kookaburra Airlines proprietors Speedy Gonsalves and Kevin Rodda set the pace early with 48 minutes from the day’s second launch. That was from RWY06, which proved to be the right runway for the whole day.

There was plenty of lift around in the late morning, as pre-solo student Liam Burrell showed with training flights of 35 and 33 minutes. Meanwhile there was much activity in the tie down area.

Bob Turner had the advice of Bert Persson and ex-club member Ken Robinson on rigging his Libelle GCP for post-Form 2 evaluation, and the distant figures in the background are Lindsay Mitchell and Tony Sorensen doing the same on the Twin Astir.

The midday launches of the two evaluation flights resulted in the previously mentioned 1:18 for Bob in GCP and 1:15 for Lindsay in IKW. Yes, big boys of the club, your toy is back for you to play with!

Meanwhile Bob’s Libelle partner Brian Allerby went flying with Speedy for another 47 minutes on what turned out to be the last long flight of the day.

By two o’clock, when Kevin Rodda took off for a solo hangar flight, the abundance of cloud had been blown away by the NE wind and the Kookaburra was down to 17 minutes. Two short circuit training flights for Liam ended gliding operations at 15:25. However that is not the end of significant flights for the day.

A new face in SPA: after the appropriate serious conversation with Duty Instructor Tony Sorensen and Tow Pilot Tony Esler, Rory Rearden changed his Duty Pilot hat for a headset and took off for his first circuits in the Pawnee.

All that flying and a new club tuggie in the making - bring on the rest of summer!
