Afternoon all and apologies for the late report.
Arriving at YCAB bright and early, our duty crew
consisted of Garrett Russell (L2), Mick Moloney
(L1), Mike McCluskey (AEI), Steve Bowtell (Tug
Pilot) and myself (DP). As some of you would already
be aware, yesterday's ops also coincided with the
Wings & Wheels aircraft/car display which had
Garrett flat out telling people in their Pontiacs
and Transams to not park our gliders in! I didn't
get to see too much of display myself but from what
I did see it was a good turnout of cars, aircraft
and spectators. Between the cars and the war birds
there was definitely no shortage of horsepower at
the field yesterday.
With no training flights scheduled and a couple of
AEI's lined up, we DI'd CQC and took her out to
runway 30 where it was evident that the circuit was
quite congested, reinforcing that maintaining a good
look out and regular radio communication was
important. The first 2 flights of the day were Mick
Moloney's 498th and 499th glider flight carrying
some ballast including myself and Garrett. Next off
the line was an AEF with Mike McCluskey, who's
passenger Alan seemed quite pleased with the flight.
By this time it was evident that bugger all lift had
developed and that most flights were barely going to
break the 20 minute mark.
One flight that did break 20 minutes (32min) and the
last launch from 30 before moving to 06 was a
milestone in Mick Moloney's flying career marking
his 500th glider flight accompanied by daughter
Melissa. Well done Mick!! Now you can start counting
towards 1000. Shane Tuck and "daughter in
law?" Jade also dropped in, resulting in Jade's
first glider flight with Mike McCluskey which she
seemed to enjoy very much. Other flights to note for
the day was a currency check for myself with Garrett
(when I tried saying I flew last weekend, Garrett
replied....no no Dan I mean real flying - referring
to gliding not powered) which I found quite amusing,
following this I went for a quick solo followed by a
tie down solo from Mike.
With only one glider out for the day and no
prospects for thermal generation, yesterday was a
busy and enjoyable day for all! Thanks to everyone
for their efforts! Including Dave Guzzwell who
dropped in for the arvo and as always provided a
helping hand.
CQC 2hr 19mins @ 8 flights.
