Flying report, Sunday 10/Aug/14

Today
started bright and clear, a good omen for glider
pilots. My duty crew email advised that there
would be one passenger for the day and at least one
student to fly so preliminary discussions between
earlybird Alan Graham and I were centred on the
potential for time-sharing of CQC. The arrival
of AEI Lindsay Mitchell quickly cast a shadow on our
hopes though as he advised us of one more definite
passenger and a further 3 probables.
CQC,
GYK and SPA were prepared for flight and transported,
along with the van, to our base for the day at 12.
First launch occurred at 1033 with Jonathan
Manifold and Peter John in GYK, by which time our
first passenger Leanne Muller had arrived. Speedy
squeezed himself into the lineup, launching in GYP
mere moments before Leanne and Lindsay in CQC.
Lindsay
managed a score of 1:02 from 4500’ in conditions
that looked very very good from the ground and set a
benchmark for our other keen aviators.
Jonathan
(not John as I wrote on the flight sheet - sorry) then
took another post-solo check/training flight with
Peter John before he had to depart for the day with
other commitments.
GYK
was eagerly grabbed by Neil Schaefer who set about
meeting Lindsay’s benchmark with a 1:04 flight,
bringing the Blanik back so others could make use of
the excellent conditions. The arrival, flight,
and departure of our second passenger, John Pook,
occurred during Neil’s solo hour.
Confirmation
of the arrival of our final 3 passengers for CQC
convinced Alan to take GYK instead and so he launched
for another benchmark beater managing 1:14. Alan’s
return, 5 minutes after Speedy, at 1510 marked the
last of the lift for the day and subsequent passenger
launches were a more modest 20-25 minutes from 3000’
Stats
for the day:
GYK
= 4 for 2:40 (with a 5 and a 17 minute training flight
included)
CQC
= 5 for 2:51 (including Lindsay’s benchmark 1:02)
and
Speedy, in GYP, who achieved 3:59/4:00 departing at
11:05 arriving at 15:04/15:05.
Thanks
to everyone for their efforts - retrieving, ferrying
passengers, minding the flight sheet while I got
lunch, putting gliders away and a myriad other things.
