A
rather rare occurrence for the Friday crew saw us
actually flying again on a Friday as it was cool
and, most importantly, dry. With weather
conditions cooperating, we got ourselves organised
on 12 under the supervision of Bob Turner and Tony
Sorensen and launched Tony and Jessica Bellamy in
GYK well before 1000 hrs; in fact, they were back
before 1000 hrs. An omen of what was in store?
Given
such a good start, time-wise, we hoped for a busy
and productive day with new member, Luke Amundsen
ready for a training flight in GYK and Bob
Hainsworth, Charles Hoch and me hoping for another
flight in IKW to renew our familiarity with the
Twin and Ken Mitchell continuing his conversion to
IKW. We were pleased to see Garrett Russell
driving out to join us, gently, in our endeavours
after missing a couple of weeks of flying weather.

Garrett's recuperation from surgery progressing to the
point where he spent the day at the flight line.!

It seemed the Twin was to be in great
demand as Kevin Rodda came out to fly our passenger,
Will Moreau, and scored what looked like the flight of
the day with 27 mins but that record was promptly
broken by Bob Turner and Luke’s score of 32
mins.

Tony and Ken Mitchell brought us back
to earth with a much shorter flight after that but we
persisted and kept tuggie John Knox busy until Steve
Bowtell arrived to release him from his stint in SPA.
Thanks to both. John Nestor brought JY out to
join us later in the proceedings but even the Libelle
could not wring extra minutes from the air, a
certainty confirmed by Kevin when he set off in his
motor glider only to return relatively soon.
By
the close of day when all gliders were being tied
down, we had a tally of 15 flights with GYK’s seven
flights recording 1.37; IKW’s six flights totaling 1.43 and the John Nestor, in the Libelle, returning
after 22 and 25 mins, respectively, and all flying
ceasing at 16.23.
After
that, we had the task of putting gliders to bed and
sorting out the paperwork before confronting the
traffic. Lindsay Mitchell had called in to check on
‘things’ and was called on to repair the wheel on
the Libelle’s dolly to get it to the flight line. We
were sad to see that at the end of the day, the tyre
was again peeling off the wheel so there is
another repair job to be done. Thanks Lindsay for
getting this sorted for the Friday crew. Hopefully, it
can be fixed for the weekend members – maybe?
