The
weather gods only half smiled on us today.
The
morning sky actually looked more promising than Friday’s gloom
as Duty Instructor John Ashford led a small but enthusiastic
team through the l’Hotellier greasing of CQC. Most
enthusiastic was the sole pre-solo student present, brand new
member Jesse Gane:
Jesse
is a student at Aviation High and recipient of an RSL flying
scholarship, and he showed just why he won that scholarship in
the natural and relaxed manner with which he handled his first
instructional flights.
Not
quite so relaxed, unfortunately, was AEI Rod Wilson’s one
and only passenger, who he wisely brought back to earth
after just three minutes of frantic fidgets, heart
palpitations and heavy breathing – female reactions Rod
may have yearned for in his youth, but not since he took up
flying!
The
only other flights to keep Duty Pilot Adam Luff and Tuggie
Karl Bodi active enough to avoid freezing in the wind that
came straight down RWY 12 were for John Clayton to assess
Garrett Russell for a move to L2 instructor. These, plus a
longer and much warmer session over Macca’s banana bread
and coffee, were enough for JC to award your reporter with
the first ever Teddy Bear stamp in his logbook – and a
provisional instructor rating subject to RTO approval.

So
the day ended on smiles all round despite just 61 minutes
total time from five flights in CQC, in conditions which
worsened to the point that we had to dodge showers to get
the glider to bed. And that was not long after lunch time.

Will
we get a half smile or scowl tomorrow? Watch this space for
weather updates!
