It was a pretty busy day for the Caboolture Gliding Club with a lot going on and a few rather interesting events to say the least.

9:00 am and a gaggle of white vehicles appears.

Tim Williams kicked off the day's proceedings with the first of three post solo training flights in GYK under the instruction of Steve Bowtell from 06. However, it took a while to convince the powered aircraft that this was in fact the correct runway for the day.

Then I personally came up with a brand new error as Duty Pilot (one that will take some beating). It certainly serves as a good lesson to other Duty Pilots regardless of experience. The lesson ...... always make sure that people who turn up for Air Experience Flights (with a voucher) have in fact found the correct organisation/club for their flight. It was not until well after Kevin Rodda had taken Christian James for a lovely 43 minute flight, while his wife looked on, that we realised that they had booked on Red Balloon and were actually supposed to be going with one of the motor gliding organisations at YCAB. Thanks so much to Steve Bowtell for explaining that to our opposition, although I am sure he told them about our very silly Duty Pilot in our defence. Either way, the guests enjoyed their day so much that they said they would be back (providing they book with us of course).

There was a mass turn out, which covered three generations, including a grandfather with considerable gliding experience to watch Kevin's second AEF. I think the family enjoyed the day as much as Zach, who took the flight, and the group made special mention of the great hospitality of our club and were very thankful for a great day. Good work to all involved !!

Zach Hewett with Kevin Rodda.

The third AEF was the longest as Kevin treated Michael Jacobson to his first gliding experience. The flight time was bang on one hour, although I had to look away and may have missed the exact landing time by about 20 seconds to keep Kev happy and get the hour booked in. Nice work Kevin as all AEF's, including those meant for other organisations, left the field very happy with their experiences.

With the AEF's out of the way, Karl Bodi took a friend in the Blanik for the longest flight of the day just cracking the two hour mark with 2:03. Steve Bowtell took a friend of mine, Steven East (Griffith Uni student), for his first glider flight. The lift was beginning to fade by this time and as such they were back in 32 mins. Around this time also, Lindsay Mitchell and Mick Moloney brought the Libelle down to the flight line after working on it all day under the watchful eye of Lindsay's puppy dog. Lindsay was back in just under 20 mins but proved the Libelle more than airworthy. Then he and a number of helping hands packed it away in its trailer.

There were two other flights ... one by Bert in his motorglider and one by Speedy in his Ka6, but while Bert went to Kilcoy and back twice (a 5 hour flight) and entertained the crowd at the pie cart with his powered departure, Speedy had me 'eating my hat' after I told all the guests that he would not be back for hours. I won't mention the time but obviously it was not up to Speedy's normal standard and even had him saying he may be banned from the K6 club. I don't think he needs to worry though, as his previous record must allow for the occasional 'bomb out' as he put it. Either way, it provided him and Kevin Rodda a little time late in the day to get the radio in QA working from both the front and the back. Well done for that one guys.

Just to reiterate Scrubby's recent instructions for the new Falcon, you must put the red fuse (in centre console) in the CRT LP spot in the fuse box to get it started and remove it at the end of the day. I had to refer to his email after trying it without success a couple times, but it certainly is a pleasure to fly, sorry drive, our new vehicles. Let's look after them !!!!

Thanks must also go to Mike Grady for piloting SPA all day and delivering our gliders into the lift and to Tony Sorrenson for being our L1 for the day. All in all, another great day at CGC although I have just been informed by my better half that I have 'Raccoon Eyes' and should have applied my sunscreen a little earlier and reapplied. I think I will be hearing 'I told you so' for the next couple of days. Something to keep in mind along with hydration etc. during the Summer months and long days at the airfield.
Stats as follows:
CQC  4 flights  2 hours 56 mins
GYK  4 flights  3 hours 03 mins
GJY  1 flight  19 mins
and Speedy's flight

Safe flying all and happy landings !!
