Three tuggie Friday

10-Aug-13

A "toothless" TOJ ... note the new bright blue nose that has replaced the former red and white shark's-tooth pattern ... with CGC tugmaster Steve Bowtell at the controls. General consensus at the flight line was that TOJ looks much better without the teeth!

Not only three tuggies but three instructors as well, and all kept busy for the time they were on hand. That¹s a pretty big Friday 13 flights and just short of five hours flying and all in the absence of most of the regular Friday crew!

Barry McCarthy, Arthur Mailey, Bob Hainsworth and Charles Hoch were all otherwise occupied and Judith Smith had business which called her away from the Pie Cart about lunchtime. Their places were very well filled by less ‘senior’ Friday regulars Ken Mitchell and John Nestor, new members (as of last Friday) Kevin Dobbie and Neil Schaefer, irregulars David Higgs and Rod Wilson looking for annual check flights, and a very irregular visit across the Tasman from former club instructor Dave Austin. Welcome back to flying the big island, Dave!

Dave¹s 46 minute flight with duty instructor Bob Turner in CQC shared the honour for flight of the day with Neil Schaefer¹s first flight in a glider for many decades and Neil followed that with another 45 minutes in company with Bob, soaring back up for extended flying after he entertained the Pie Cart crowd with many repeated spins. Bob must have finished the day feeling rather spun out, having also done David and Rod¹s check flights.

Meanwhile I did training flights with Kevin and a daily check with John, David was pressed into service as the third instructor to check Ken out before his solo, and we trooped off for a lengthy runway change from 24 to 12.

Our three tuggies were John Knox, Steve Bowtell and Bert Persson, who stepped in to keep us flying when Steve had to leave for work early. Thanks to all three for a great effort.

The afternoon saw Shane Tuck and Dave Crocker join the throng, and very great thanks are due to Shane for an outstanding example of club spirit. He happily gave up his line in the flight queue in favour of helping Bert put the tug away and filling the car fuel jerry cans so that Dave could get more than one flight in the limited time we had available and on the second of those flights Dave scored the Blanik flight of the day at 32 minutes.

First flight next Friday is reserved for you, Shane, with thanks!
