10 flights and a new prime minister Sunday

All
the voting and TV election coverage on Saturday must
have tired a lot of people out, because only five
members apart from the duty crew enjoyed Sunday¹s
great flying weather. And two of those members
actually came out to do some heavy
maintenance work as a priority over flying.
Chris
Weir and Alan Graham were hard at work welding the
frame of the Libelle
trailer as duty pilot Alex Horvath, AEI Neil Muspratt,
Theo Mus and I
started to take ‘new’ Blanik GXQ and same old
IS-28 CQC to the RWY 30 flight
line. Meanwhile duty instructor Peter John and standby
tuggie Ben Mitchell
were busy getting TOJ ready.
We were
soon joined by Karl Bodi and later Dave Crocker for 10
flights and a total of 3:20 flying time.
Flight
of the day was 1:03 for Neil’s AEF passenger (and a
possible future new
member) in CQC. Neil climbed to 3,500 feet twice
during that flight, sharing
one of the thermals with Dave Crocker and me in GXQ.
It was close enough
to the airfield to give the passenger¹s family a good
view of gliders (and
birds) circling together. The Blanik flight was 0:27
as Dave did not connect
with lift again until at 1,000 feet on downwind entry
tempting, but
resolutely refused!
CQC
got close to the hour again with 0:52 for Chris Weir,
minus welding mask,
with his daughter in the passenger seat.
The
rest of the flights were deliberately short training
and check launches. Theo
Mus did four circuits, Alan Graham got more familiar
with the 28’s back seat
and discovered he doesn’t fit in the Blanik’s
and Alex Horvath joined
Chris Weir for a hangar flight in CQC.
Peter
John and I turned the other hangar flight into a proof
of concept exercise
for a new outlanding simulation scenario landing
between the new bitumen
crossover at the 06 threshold and the existing
concrete crossover near
the fuel pump. It¹s a suitably tight ‘paddock’
complete with the odd pot
hole to avoid, and it made a satisfying end to a good
day’s flying.
Final
scores:
CQC
4 flights 2:09
GXQ
6 flights 1:11
Hopefully
with the election behind us many more members will
feel the urge to
enjoy the great spring weather with many more flights
next weekend!
