It was a
beautiful morning that greeted us at the airfield as
we readied IKW and GYK this morning (8/8ths clear blue
sky with virtually no wind) ... and the weather
remained that way all day for our operations from the
flight line at RWY12 ...

Mitchell joined us for a brief maintenance visit
during the morning (thanks again to Lindsay and the
rest of Rod Elsworth's airworthiness team for their
ongoing efforts that keep our members flying) and we also
had the pleasure of sharing "first gliding"
experiences with three visitors ...

Bob
Hainsworth brought Sean Ward with him to the airfield
today (Sean took flights with Bob as well as Barry
McCarthy),
while Ken Mitchell's friend Inga Freidenfeld took a
flight withy Tony Sorensen. Both enjoyed their days
with us, not just the flights ... the entire set-up,
operations and pack-up
experience!

Our
third visitor, David Tan (a power pilot from
Singapore who is from time to time in Australia now
that his daughter resides in Brisbane) was
originally at the airfield to experience gliding
flight as a "pay on day" Air Experience
passenger after flying on the dark side at Redcliffe
earlier in the week. I had the pleasure of taking
David on his first gliding flight, and, with only a
few small patches of lift close in to the south-west
of the airfield, we "set the pace" for
what became an intriguing battle for the longest
flight of the day honours. Garrett's hospitality
around the flight line convinced David to stay on,
and after another flight as my guest later in the
day, he became our newest member.

Welcome
to our newest member David Tan!

Back to
the "longest flight of the day" battle ...
our 34 minute Air Experience flight in IKW was
seriously challenged by successive flights from Judith
Smith and Arthur Mailey (33 minutes in GYK), Tony
Sorensen and Inga Freidenfeld (31 minutes in GYK),
Barry McCarthy and Jessica Bellamy (33 minutes in GYK)
... before finally being toppled by Barry McCarthy and
Sean Ward (37 minutes also in GYK). Congratulations to
Barry and Sean ... David and I just had to settle for the
longest flight of the day in
IKW!

Comment
was made during the day about how professionally Tony
Sorensen cuts and packs the sandwiches that he brings
to the airfield (refer the photo at the top of this
page ... they showed a remarkable resemblance to the
pre-packed sandwiches that can be purchased from
"the servo").

Garrett
Russell commented that today was actually his third
trip to the Airfield this week (Gliding Club Committee
meeting on Monday night, Aero Club meeting on
Wednesday night and Gliding Operations today). While
he did partake of a "tie-down" flight with
Tony Sorensen in GYK, the main aim of his day at the
airfield today was exercise as part of his
recuperation from surgery. Walking the wings to
retrieve IKW after my two long landings certainly
helped him in that
quest!

|
|
|
Summary:
|
|
IKW 6
flights for 2:13
|
|
GYK 6
flights for 2:32
|
|
Day
Total: 12 flights for 4:45
|
|
Operations
remained at RWY12 all day.
|
|
End of
day "tie-down flights" landed on
RWY06.

I trust
that the "delicate" sustenance message in
this report was not too subliminal ... sustinance
is a
very important part of any day at the airfield
... in particular hydration (drinking enough
fluids to retain the body's water
balance)!
