Saturday
Once I got
over the initial shock of seeing one
of my favourite aircraft in 1000
pieces (yes, it's a powered aircraft
but I love WXX as much as GYK),
I headed to the tie down area where the
duty crew were greeted with a
completely blue sky.
With
two students using the 'MIR' system, Duty
Instructor, Garrett Russell, was
already unwrapping GYK when (Air
Cadet) Tyler Morrison and (new
to gliding PPL pilot) Rory Reardon
arrived.
AEI,
Lindsay Mitchell, did not have any passengers
booked so he decided to use the
day to tweak the airbrakes on the
IS30 and so Rory assisted him
with getting it to the flight line.

Maybe
not Tyler's or Garrett's best sides but a
good DI is essential...
Mark Thompson had SPA at the RWY 12 threshold
and I had the Pie Cart setup just as the two
gliders arrived. The first flight for Tyler
and Garrett was into the blue at 10:12 and, as Tyler
is really looking at short training flights
they returned in just 14 minutes. Second
flight was a short repeat of just 10mins but
the bottom line is that Tyler is really
getting the hang of GYK !!

That's when the lift kicked in !! Garrett
and Rory launched and had a great flight of 65
minutes coming back only because both he and
Tyler were really after the shorter training
flights with quick succession take off and
landing practice. There is little doubt that
our newest member Rory is hooked on gliding
based on the smile on his face. He and
Garrett told me they even shared
thermals with two seagulls, one eagle and
a plastic bag. It was a very lucky flight as
Garrett told us that this was only
the second time in his flying career that
he has shared a thermal with an inanimate
object. I forgot to ask so Garrett, you must
remember to tell me what the other one was
sometime.

I was lucky enough to have Lindsay ask if I
would like to be his passenger in
the IS30 while he checked out his handy work
on the airbrakes. As per his email to the
members this morning, we are pleased to
confirm that this minor issue has been fully
resolved and I look forward to more flights in
this lovely aircraft.

Speedy brought
the Kookaburra to the flight line as well as a
number of guests. He took two flights with
them (Terri Guaroala and Dan Vandermalle) in
GLM and then Lindsay took Hervey Rich in the
IS30.

From there it
was back to the last training flights with two
more for Tyler and one more for Rory
in the Blanik with Tyler landing on 06.
Lindsay and Rory took the IS30 back to 06
while Lockie and I met them in the Barina to
get the aircraft back to the tie down area.

It was a long
day with many people and aircraft at the
airfield as the museum were flying the
Mustang a lot and a group of scouts were pouring
over the C-47. There is a lot of air traffic
around on these busy weekend days so
please remember to keep a good lookout, both
visual and listening when flying at YCAB. Please
also look after the club assets, be gentle
with the vehicles and keep our new
Pie Cart clean and tidy, and remember to lock
it properly at the end of the day as well.
