"New" Tuggie Saturday

07-Mar-15

Garrett Russell (Duty Instructor), Mark Thompson (Instructor) and I (Air Experience Instructor and fill-in Duty Pilot) were busy removing water from the covers of IKW at the tie-down area this morning when we spotted what we thought might have been a potential new member striding towards us from the Aero Club car park carrying a back pack over his shoulder. Our hopes were increased further when he stopped at the nose of IKW and said "G'day". It was only then that we realised it was actually our rostered Tug Pilot Steve Chapman minus the beard ...

Daily inspections were completed on the Twin Astir (IKW) and the Blanik (GYK) and we headed for RWY12 as the Women of Aviation day at YCAB got under way.

Aircraft of all types lined up at the front of Hangar 107 as the Women of Aviation event got under way at around 9.00 am

As I set up the flight line at RWY12 it became more obvious to me as to why comments had been made about MOO's "gypsy caravan resemblance" since the new roof has been installed.

RWY12 soon became a procession of various powered aircraft taking participants in the "Women of Aviation" day on flights ... in particular the radio was full of "Tiger One" to "Tiger Two" and similar calls as two of the three Tiger Moths flying today undertook formation flights during the morning.

Garrett Russell did two family/friend flights with Pat Danaher in the Blanik ... an experience that Pat enjoyed immensely (but must have felt very foreign to him compared to being at the controls of commercial passenger aircraft).

The arrival of members Mark Yabsley and Rupert Perry increased the activity at the flight line to a final tally of 8 flights for a total of 2 hrs 31 mns (GYK 5 flights for 1hr 23 mns and IKW 3 flights for 1hr 8 mns).

Cloud base was at only 2000 feet for early flights but lifted to 3000 feet by around noon ... there was some lift to be had but basically it was good weather for training circuits.

My 30 minute AEF flight with "Women of Aviation" participant Julie Sheather in IKW ended up being the longest flight of the day while the hangar flight in IKW (Mark Thompson sharing the last launch of the day with Garrett Russell at 2:20 pm) was the next longest flight at 24 minutes.

The cooler and less humid conditions made life in the shade much more enjoyable than was the case last weekend!
