 Another 'first solo' day

05-Sep-15

Duty crew today was David Higgs as Duty Instructor, Dan Kershaw flying the tug, and Lindsay Mitchell as our Air Experience Instructor ... and, as Duty Pilot, I got to do my first Daily Inspection of GQA and we headed off to 12 for some flying stuff.

A beautiful morning with beguiling clouds looked really promising as the day began, and though the day stayed stunning, there really wasn't any lift to find in the sky, which to be fair suited us just fine as both gliders were fully utilised all day.

David's dance card was full with training for Rory Rearden, and check for Lindsay and myself to complete. Lindsay had two AEF flights to do and ended up also taking Dan's brother Alex up for a flight at the end of the day.

Lindsay was first up with David to get his out of the way before his first passenger turned up. AEF Kevin McFarlane turned up just as Lindsay landed after a 12 minute flight. Though his wife was slightly worried (helped by a little gentle winding up by sisters) Kevin returned after a 30 minute flight grinning from ear to ear, thoroughly pleased that he had finally had a go at gliding.

David started Rory's day with a 15 minute lesson, and before both gliders had returned my phone buzzed with our second visitors, Grant Cory for a father's day treat.

After they took off we saw a familiar looking blue clad Karl Bodi type gentlemen appear. Karl spent the rest of the afternoon with us, and helped us with customers and packing up, thanks Karl!

Lindsay and Grant managed 32 minutes, and again a beaming and suddenly much more chatty customer, emerged from the glider. We may yet see Grant and family return.

David set off with Rory for another lesson and were away for 12 minutes, then it was my turn to be tested. I had a thoroughly enjoyable 13 minutes and I'm guessing that's because I took a while to figure out how to get the Blanik to spin.
As Rory towed us back to the launch point, we were amazed to see Karl had changed shape a little. As we got nearer to the pie cart he resolved into a similarly clad Kevin Rodda.

Kevin stole GQA for a 21 minute flight, confirming what we all knew about the day.

Rory took another 12 minute flight with CFI David and we were very pleased to then see Mr Higgs standing outside the glider and hooking Rory up for his FIRST GLIDER SOLO

Congratulations Rory, and welcome to the light side!

Rory managed 13 minutes which is the same time and same release height as Lindsay and Alex Kershaw who were next doing a hanger flight in GQA so well done mate!

Last flight of the day was David Higgs who treated Rory to a hanger flight in GYK.

First flight at 10:09 last landing at 16:02. A great day with everyone achieving what they set out to.

Thank you everyone who helped out retrieving and talking to customers. Thanks especially to Karl - I certainly appreciated the help!

Please note, the AGM is next Saturday morning - if you can fill in a Proxy form or even better turn up in the morning - we need members to turn up and vote!

DUTY PILOT

Unbeknown to the later arrivals, David Higgs had an expected but welcome early visit from Arthur Mailey this morning. Arthur helped David reverse the van out and then did some touch-up work on the pie-cart before heading back home for breakfast.

Some handy Ground Operations advice from the CFI ... always check your pockets before you leave the airfield otherwise you may accidentally take the Ford car keys home with you and have to return them early the next day!
