Sunday saw a relaxed start in promising conditions. Tuggie Mike Grady reported for duty, but having been poked in the eye by a tree branch during the previous evening, he was referred off to the local Casualty Department.  Consequently tug duties were shared between Duty Instructor Peter John and Instructor Mark Thompson.

We initially headed off with GYK and CQC to Runway 30 in variable conditions, but subsequently changed to 06 when the predicted north-easterlies arrived.
First cab off the rank was Neil Muspratt with our first AEF of the day Georgina White.  Jonathan Manifold then practiced descent on tow in the Blanik under Mick Moloney’s watchful eye.

Meanwhile the developing cumulus prompted Kevin Rodda and “Speedy” Gonsalves to bring the K6 (GRV) and the Kookaburra (GLM) into service.  Bert Persson was also observed self launching from halfway down 30 in the TST 10-M (GIM).

Kevin was rewarded with flight of the day at 2hrs 50mins, while Speedy entertained friend Julie Jacobs for 2hrs 6mins and Bert did a leisurely 2hrs 30mns from a self-launch in GIM.

Our second AEF Eddie Muirhead was rewarded with a 55min flight in the 28, and showed some interest in pursuing gliding further.

However perhaps the day’s highlight was welcoming new member Greg Brinkley who undertook his first two training flights under Mark Thompson’s guidance.

A big welcome to CGC's  newest member Greg Brinkley.

Jonathan Manifold took GYK for a brief solo, but his main intent was to try to collect data on variations in atmospheric pressure using a sensor kindly acquired by dad Nick, and attached to a laptop computer.  The equipment was strapped and duct-taped to the rear seat to PJ’s satisfaction.  Apparently this is how you do a Grade 11 science project in 2014!  (for my Grade 11 science project in the mid-60’s .. 1960’s that is ... I had to BUILD the test equipment).

Mick Moloney treated friends Oliver John and Lisa Gates to flights of 36 and 26 minutes respectively in the 28.

My particular thanks to Alan Graham and Rupert Perry who, as usual, cheerfully provided support throughout the day and shared the penultimate flight of the day of 18 minutes in CQC.
The return of Messrs Gonsalves, Persson and Rodda  heralded the end of the good conditions, and stumps were drawn at about 1600 hrs over a few refreshments back at the hangar.
