As reported separately, Jessica Bellamy made her first solo flight on our first flying day of Spring. It was a suitably joyous occasion.

Jess with Tony Sorensen

Jessica received congratulations from Tony Sorensen, who along with Barry McCarthy and Bob Turner, shared so much of her flying instruction.

But that wasn’t the end of the good news. Jessica has an interview on Monday for a place in the Rex Airlines cadet pilot program. We wish her the very best for that and think it’s worth celebrating with post-solo photos of the duty instructor and tug pilot:

Mike Grady (Tug Pilot) with Jess

Before Mike Grady took over in SPA, John Knox had towed all of Jessica’s morning flights and an AEF passenger flight taken by Tony.

The rest of the day was devoted to training flights for brand new member Jim Thompson and relatively new member Bill Beeton, plus a couple of mutual flights in GQA for Arthur Mailey and Charles Hoch - all in a clear blue sky with just enough lift for best flight of the day to be 32 minutes.

That flight was Jim’s introductory launch. Sorry to say an introductory photo of Jim was forgotten in all the first solo excitement, and back on that score I’m pleased to report that Jessica’s last-before-solo flight was an almost-as-good 26 minutes in which she gained about 1500 feet!

Summary for the day:
GYK 10 flights 2:40
GQA 3 flights 1:01

A good day for a small crew, with the majority of our Friday flyers away on other things.
