Hi all, this is my first email to the new members list, using it as a test, maybe Kevin will confirm receipt when he doubtless copies the text into the website along with Garrett's Photos.

The day started early as usual with a clear blue sky, already very hot, with most of the Friday crew present. Judith and Bob Turner were conspicuous by their absence, but also present were Rupert Perry with friends Anthony Burns and Peter Krenske, Robert Hart, Dan Kershaw, Prospective new member Louis Tumminaro from America, Shane Tuck who was expecting the arrival of 4 family and friends, and finally Peter Ousby who was unsure what he wanted to do. In no particular order of arrival, it got far too confusing to keep track of that. The 2 seaters GYK and CQC were DI'ed and the pie cart taken down to 30, which the power pilots were using, there was very little wind. Arthur Mailey stayed behind to DI the Libelle. Garrett Russell and Ken Mitchell took the first launch at 0926, followed by John Nestor in the Blanik, both for impressive 18 minute flights, while I helped Louis complete the membership application forms, he knew what he wanted to do!

We all thought that had set the pattern for the day's flights, but the Libelle arrived at the flight line and somehow Robert Hart jumped in ( must have been a rare moment of inattention from Arthur), and returned 1 hour and 1 minute later. This was by far the flight of the day, after that nobody achieved more than 24 minutes. By this time there was wind and the decision was made to relocate to 06, where we remained for the rest of the day with variable light winds. It was decided to give all club members a launch while the prospect of lift was still being demonstrated by Robert, and before Shane's guests arrived, so Rupert took his friend Anthony up in CQC for17 minutes, while Dan Kershaw soloed in GYK for 14 minutes, then Charles Hoch and myself had a mutual in CQC for a recorded time of 24 minutes, though I believe the time keepers were kind to us. Then Louis, who is a power pilot back home, had his first flight with Barry McCarthy in the blanik for 20 minutes.

Friday regulars missing from this scene areCharles Hoch and Arthur Mailey (putting GJY to bed), Bob Hainsworth (in the Pie Cart office) and Tony Sorensen (in the Tug office). Central to the scene are Shane Tuck and members of his family who accounted for a quarter of the day’s flights. [photo and captioj courtesy of Garrett Russell]

By this time the Libelle was back and was seized by Arthur and flown for a glorious 18 minutes, and Shane's party arrived, 3 charming young ladies answering to Nix, Pixie, and Bex, and 1 boyfriend, Simon Ward.  Simon was taken up by Speedy in CQC as he was a well built lad pushing the 110 kg limit, for 21 minutes. Meanwhile Peter Ousby completed a temporary GFA form and was taken up in the Blanik by Barry for 24 minutes, though he still did not seem to know whether he really wanted to join the club. Robert then took Rebecca Tuck (obviously Bex) in CQC for 19 minutes while Garrett took Peter Krenske in the Blanik for 16 minutes.

Next Steve Bowtell got Tony Sorensen to fly the tug while he took up Carla Reynolds (Pixie, by elimination) for 18 minutes, while Shane soloed in the Blanik for 14. Garrett then took Nicole Warren (Nix, obviously) for 21 minutes in CQC, completing the flights for Shane's group. Ever the optimist, Arthur decided to try again in the Libelle, a tie down flight so maybe a low launch, but after 13 minutes he and Charlie were putting her to bed.

Meanwhile Wayne Burgess arrived at the pie cart after an absence of some years, and re- introduced himself, stating that he would like to resume gliding and needed a an annual check. A small problem was lack of current GFA membership, but he got on the phone to them and eventually managed to renew his membership with immediate effect. John Nestor took GYK for a solo flight of 16 minutes while Dan Kershaw and Rupert Perry took CQC for a mutual achieving 19, after which Steve Bowtell doubled his tally of glider flights for the year to date by giving Wayne his annual check. Wayne does not appear to have lost the knack, he passed and his landing looked very good to me.

Finally Peter Ousby made a decision, deciding that he would not join the club after all, and paid for his AEF flight. As he left he hedged his bets saying maybe we would see him again next week, so perhaps he had not made a decision after all. A very long hot day ended with Barry and Ken flying CQC for 14 minutes to the tie down, and Garrett taking Peter Krenske in GYK for 11 to the tie down area. I escaped from the still hot sun into Kevin's hangar to complete the paperwork while the others sweated putting everything away, it wrapped up about 5.00 pm with some cleansing ales.

The Stats:

 Libelle: 3 flights totalling 1 hour 32
 IS 28:   9 flights, 2 hours 51
 Blanik:  9 flights, 2 hours 30
