First August Friday

02-Aug-13

"Lipstick on your collar told a tale on you, lipstick on your collar said you were untrue" ... it was a really big hit for Connie Frances in 1959 but at the pie-cart? ... all will be revealed!

It was about time the weather gave us a break and it seems August was to be the month. Fingers crossed!

With gliders, vehicles and van all prepared to go Barry McCarthy and Garrett
Russell's little band of hopeful members set off with CQC and GYK to set up
on 06. The usual group of Bob Hainsworth, Arthur Mailey, Charles Hoch, Ken
Mitchell and John Nestor made sure everything was ready for the arrival of
TOJ but TOJ was taking its time arriving - as we had been warned it may.
Sitting in the sun watching the activity about us was mildly entertaining,
so hopes rose when Steve Bowtell brought it out for its check flight which,
thankfully, Steve was satisfied with.

Glider flights commenced smartly at 10.30 with Barry and Garrett both
departing in GYK for a quick check and returning with a report that lift was
developing. Then the rush was on to fit in further checks for our newly solo
members and the arrival of Shane Tuck added to the list, keeping instructors
busy. Kevin Dobbie also arrived to join the Club so there was another person
to add to the list for the instructors - keeping GYK very busy right up to
last light with a total of 11 flights

New member Kevin Dobbie with Garrett Russell (Instructor) and Blanik GYK.

Kevin Rodda appeared and was soon immersed in checking the contents of 'the port' and the money box as well as chatting to those waiting to fly.

By day's end, he had two new members to add to our number and another visitor taking away a membership application.

New member Neil Schaefer ... you may have seen Neil around the Airfield (he is an instructor with GoFly Aviation).

CQC had a quieter day than YK with Arthur Mailey taking a friend, Ray
Griffiths for a flight of nearly an hour, before Bob Hainsworth and Charles
Hock set off for the first of their two flights together. Arthur's second
flight scored the flight of the day at 1.11, giving us 4 flights in CQC for
a total of 2.47. After that, it was taken back home and put to bed.

GYK's flights started with Ken, Shane and John's checks before they were
able to set off for their solo flights. New member, Kevin was keen to start
his gliding instruction with Garrett. Then David Crocker arrived to continue
his time with instructors so they continued as we packed CQC away and
eventually put the van away too while we waited for the  final flight to
land. By the time paperwork was done and everything was locked up the
airfield was deserted and dark as I left in the chilly evening air. Great
work Steve getting our 15 flights away after a late start. Thank you.

Peter Stephenson with Jenny Thompson (ex CGC Member who now flies with DDSC) and Garrett Russell ... Jenny was driving by, saw the lights on and dropped in to say "Gooday". And the photo at the top of this page? Peter Stephenson dropped in looking very formal but with lipstick on his collar ... all the more intriguing when he informed us that he had just attended a funeral!
