It looked like it was going to be a bit of a non-event Saturday. Only the duty crew were at the airfield and the best news to report was that we got the Barina back:

Graeme Manietta delivered it positively purring from the tender care of his apprentice (the car, not Graeme) and we immediately pressed it back into retrieve service. He also took the white Suzuki to see if it will respond to a similar miraculous makeover, so many thanks, Graeme, for all the hard work!

But there’s a hint of great news to come in the photo above. See the clouds above the glider wing? They’re the energy mentioned in my 09:00 message, and they lived up to their promise with a 55 minute first flight in CQC for David Guzzwell. He quickly followed that solo with 42 more minutes mentored by Bert Persson.

Meanwhile Kevin Rodda, with no passengers booked, pulled his orange rocket WUC out of the hangar and revealed what may be the greatest secret of its legendary flying prowess:

Yes, Kevin has a glider with balls

And just to prove it, that glider took off at 11:03 and landed at 16:05 - the rare and elusive Five Hour Caboolture Flight!

For almost one of those hours Kevin shared the sky and thermals with David and Bert; for another hour plus he was flying in company with Adam French and me as Adam expanded his back seat experience to thermaling the 28.

The statistics:

WUC 1 launch 5:02
CQC 4 launches 2:43

So if you see a message that the sky has energy tomorrow morning (or any other day) come out to the field and add your own verse to the saga of soaring at CGC!

Garrett,

I took a 2800 feet launch from RWY06 at 11:03 and it took me almost exactly 60 mins to get to 3500 feet  and then almost exactly another 30 minutes to get to 4000 feet outside the step to the north of Hazelton Airstrip. So wasn't easy work early on.

Later in the day I found lots of 3-5 knot thermals to 4000 feet, mainly in a south-eastish to north-westish band (030 to 120) to the north of YCAB ...

4000 feet and climbing at 3-5 knots

I spent a large part of the flight later in the day running in a 15 klm straight line from Donnybrook to Glasshouse Mountains (downwind) and back (upwind) under clouds streets at between 3500 feet and 4000 feet.

The maximum height I could get to was 4300 feet (cloud base for a while to the north of the airfield in a band outside the 3500ft step).  .

Running a straight line Donnybrook to Glasshouse Mountains and climbing!

One end of the straight line runs was Donnybrook (12 klm from YCAB)... view over Donnybrook to Bribie Island Bridge ...

... and at the other end was Glasshouse Mountains (20klm from YCAB) ... Mt Tibrogargan in the centre of the pic with Mt Coonowrin (Crookneck) and Mt Beerwah further back and to the left

Regards,

Kevin Rodda
