01-Dec-13

Chris Weir's friend Ben Murray took this video during his flight at YCAB with Chris today in IS-28 CQC.

Garrett's email from a washed out Saturday afternoon said ... "The runways are already reasonably flyable and should dry out further with overnight wind - forecast beats today's and the grass is beautifully green - so hop in for a good day of flying!" (photo provided by Garrett Russell).

I told you it was condition green for today and here’s the proof of the promise:

First flight (Blanik) 45 minutes. What more need be said?

Well actually, in the interests of a balanced (and somewhat longer) report it should also be said that this was also the longest flight of the day for all gliders, private and club. Shortest was one minute, when Kevin Rodda released Kookaburra GLM off a tow that was getting close to vertical in the gusty and turbulent conditions.

Peter Pretorius (at left) gives Bert Persson and Kevin Rodda some "pre-flight where the thermals should be" advice while Adam French is ready for the launch. This was Kevin's first ever flight in a Kookaburra (photo provided by Lindsay Mitchell).

So the soaring wasn’t quite as good as Friday’s and the conditions were a sterner test of take offs and landings. But it was a great day for the crew who were there.

Kevin Rodda logged the second best flight at 38 minutes with his son Aron, also in GYK (after an unscheduled return under airbrakes from 3,300 ft when Aron found suddenly that hevhad enough of turning tight circles). Lindsay Mitchell scored bronze with 35 minutes accompanied by Adam French in CQC. Kevin narrowly missed out on a second podium position with 32 minutes under the tutelage of Bert Persson in the Kookaburra. Oh, and the 45 minute gold medal flight was by Barry McCarthy and your correspondent.

While Bert took aero club guest Peter Pretorius vintage gliding in GLM, others racked up achievements on the ground as well as in the air. Adam French is now endorsed for metal DI and signed off daily checks. Chris Weir effectively finished the new frame on the Libelle trailer before taking his mate (and potential club member) Ben Murray for a few flights. And Barry McCarthy celebrated the arrival of his new glasses with a return to full instructing duties!

Bert Persson and Kevin Rodda managed to launch into the wrong part of the "thermal cycling" that was happening at YCAB today. There was fairly good lift available before and after their flight (photo provided by Aron Rodda).

Mike Grady towed all 11 launches into sometimes challenging conditions and finished the day with his usual uperb job of cleaning the tug. Thank you Mike, without you today's crew would never have got off the ground!

The flight line at 12 was fairly busy all day ...  from the back of the line, Blanik GYK, IS-28 CQC, PAwnee Tug SPA and (in the air about to land) Kookaburra GLM (photo provided by Aron Rodda)

The stats:

CQC 5 flights 2:19

GYK 3 flights 1:18

GLM 3 flights 0:53

We would have made more than 11 flights if the fuel pump had not packed up yet again.

And as an indication that there was still some fun to be had, the two hangar flights were 24 and 26 minutes.

Does anyone recognise these two old codgers in a Kooka?

Not a bad start to summer flying!
