The
usual crew was a little short-handed today and a
decision to take only CQC out to play was
amended to CQC and GYK with the sky improving
and looking as if a one hour flight may also be
possible for John Nestor this week. Our push to
DI and depart the tie-down area was interrupted
when Lindsay arrived with his donated van which
Shane Tuck and helpers seem keen to convert to
our new pie-cart. Kevin Rodda arrived and pulled
GRV from the hangar, intending to take a
passenger for a flight before trying his luck on
his own. With John Knox ready to go, our
small group was set for a busy day on 30.
At
the urging of instructor, Bob Turner, Bob
Hainsworth, John, Karl Bodi, and visitor from
Beverley, Mus Latham and I headed off to 30 to
see if the sky was as good as the wheeling birds
seemed to indicate. John’s first effort
in GYK did not result in the hoped for 60
minutes nor did our first passenger quite stay
aloft for her hoped for 45 minutes. But as cloud
improved so did our inclination to fly,
particularly when Lindsay took our second
passenger for a 1.06 flight. That encouraged
Kevin to take wing in GRV and return after 2.29,
the flight of the day.

Everyone had a flight
of some duration but the reports ranged from some
rough air to silky smooth air, depending on where and
when the flight occurred. In other words, a bit
like the curate’s egg – good in bits. Steve
Bowtell, escorted by Nathan, arrived for a flight in a
glider for once and we appreciated his aerobatic
exercises before he settled down to proving that he
too could thermal if he chose to, climbing away
instead of having to join circuit.
The
wind later in the day seemed to strengthen and several
of us found the sink on turning final something of a
challenge, and a reminder to take nothing for granted.
At least our passengers departed happily and our
return to the tie-down area to put gliders and tug to
bed ended happily for us too with a quiet chat
reliving the events of the day before heading off to
face traffic.

From
this brief report you would not be surprised to learn
that we recorded only nine flights with CQC entering
2.48 for its four flights in its book and GYK entering
1.18 for its four. Honours for the day go to Kevin,
obviously.
Thankyous
go to our tuggies and to Bob Turner for supervising
our attempts to emulate the birds and John Knox asked
that Shane’s work on the hangar door where the tug
resides be recognised.
Finally,
a thankyou to Lindsay for the donation to the Club of
his van. I for one will be much happier when we have a
reliable piece of equipment to tow to the launch
point. Thanks Lindsay. Now, all we need is a
willing force of conversion experts to make a pie cart
of it.
As
usual, good luck to the weekend crews.
Stay
safe,

Webmaster's Note:
|
|
The new van referred to by Judith is a pop-up camper
trailer that has been donated by Lindsay Mitchell.
Many thanks Lindsay, it appears to be just what is
needed to be converted into the purpose built pie-cart
replacement that is envisaged. Meanwhile, Bob Turner
inspected the existing pie-cart and declared it
"safe" to be towed out to the flight line
"provided care is taken and someone followed it
to ensure no bits have fallen off"!
