"Morning Glory" at YCAB?

Saturday 08-Aug-09

(pics from Kevin Rodda's mobile phone)

As Bill Wheatley and Kevin Rodda turned the Aero Club corner and headed towards the main airfield gate at around 7.30 am this morning they noticed what appeared to be a "Morning Glory" type roll cloud approaching from the south east (it looked to be out over Beachmere).  On the basis that it's appearance in the distance resembled a roll cloud, Kevin commented to Bushy that it would make an interesting photo and made a mental note to take a shot when we got to the hangar. When they pulled up in front of Hangar 22 fully two minutes later, Bushy commented ... "you had  better move quickly as it is above us now". To Kevin's surprise, the cloud not only looked like a Morning Glory roll cloud, it had similar physical and behavioural characteristics to his memory of the real thing!

The pic above was taken from the apron in front of Hangar 22 under the cloud as it moved across the airfield at an incredible pace and on towards the the north west. Directly under the narrow but extremely long cloud the air at ground level was very cold compared to the air immediately in front of it and immediately behind it. It was also very dark and moist immediately under the cloud. From their vantage point it stretched to the west way out over Caboolture  and to the east back across towards Donnybrook.

This shot is from Hangar 21 just after the cloud moved over us (looking back over the garbage tip with the cloud running roughly parallel to 06-24).

Another shot from the front of Hangar 21 showing the cloud stretching back in the distance towards Hazelton Airfield and Donnybrook.

These two shots (from adjacent to Hangar 21 but now looking towards the Glasshouse Mountains) show the solid tube shape starting to break up as it moved further toward the north west.

The five pics above were all taken in a period of only 4 minutes between 7:32 and 7:36.

Kevin was fortunate enough to experience first-hand a few years back the real Morning Glory and "surf" it in a motorglider as it rolled across Burketown (it normally moves from north east to south west as it comes in from over the Gulf of Carpenteria). The roll cloud at Caboolture this morning was remarkably similar. Deception Bay is no Gulf of Carpenteria ... however it really did try very hard this morning!

When the "Caboolture Glory" continued to move further away from them, Kevin phoned Hans Oerlemans (another CGC member to have experienced the "Morning Glory" first-hand) to let him know that it was on track to the Glasshouse Mountains area where he took these fantastic shots ...

Hans estimates that the air mass travelled through at around 20-30 kilometres per hour. It had formed into parallel roll clouds (these are referred to as "primary", "secondary", "tertiary" etc and are a common phenomenon with the "Morning Glory").

We later learned that Al Harford (who has been to Burketown several times to participate in the annual "Morning Glory" season) had taken the following photo of the same "Caboolture Glory" as it moved past the Wamuran area.

Tom Claffey also witnessed the "Caboolture Glory" from the air as it passed over Moreton Island ...

      Yep,

Saw it on the way into Brisbane early Saturday morning.

      Very interesting!

Two lines were swirling around Moreton Bay, never seen the like before.
